Ask a Dermatologist: Do All Toners Have Astringent Properties?

Ask a Dermatologist: Do All Toners Have Astringent Properties?

Dr. Courtney Rubin, our Chief Medical Officer, weighs in on your most pressing skincare questions.

Astringent products have properties that allow them to remove oil from the skin and tighten pores. Ingredients with astringent properties include alcohol and witch hazel, both of which are often marketed to those with acne-prone skin and/or those who are looking to remove excess oil from the skin’s surface.

A toner may or may not contain astringent ingredients. A toner for those with sensitive or easily irritated skin will likely not contain astringent ingredients. Instead, it might include ingredients like water, glycerin, polyglyceryls or silicones to create a “thick water,” balancing feeling, without alcohol.
