Ask a Dermatologist: Is a Serum Necessary if I Don’t Have Any Current Skincare Concerns?

Dr. Courtney Rubin, our Chief Medical Officer, weighs in on your most pressing skincare questions.

Protection and prevention are the keys to long-term skin health.

In the same way that sunscreen should be used by those who don't currently have sun damage in order to prevent sun damage in the future, serums may be used by those without current skincare concerns to prevent skincare concerns in the future. Someone who wishes to avoid dark spots and discoloration may want to use a serum with niacinamide, or someone who wants to prevent fine lines and wrinkles may want to use sun protection, paired with a vitamin C or glycolic acid serum.
